Home of a Revolution

Ironbridge Gorge was the home of the industrial revolution in England. It had several natural advantages - easily accessible deposits of coal, iron ore and limestone, and easy river access to the sea and major ports.

Here the first major cast iron bridge in the world was built in 1779, crossing the gorge of the river Severn, and now there are ten different museums and 35 historic sites within the Ironbridge area. Coalport china was made here, and the bottle kilns can still be seen; the Old Furnace, where iron was made with coke instead of charcoal for the first time in 1709, can still be seen, and there's even an entire museum devoted to the making of clay tobacco pipes.

Later industrial sites in Britain have impressively massive mills and huge furnaces. But Ironbridge shows the moment at which many trades were just leaving artisan production behind - still small in scale, but introducing the first techniques which would lead, eventually, to mass production.
